What is a Game Designer and What Do They Do?

Video game design is a popular field these days.  There are thousands of video games on the market and they were all created by game video game designers.  So what exactly is a game designer and what do they do?  Basically, a video game designer creates a video game using programs and codes and then when the game has been tested, it is sent out to the public for purchase.

One of the first things that a video game design needs is a storyboard.  This looks similar to a comic book with all the stages of the game laid out in sequential order.  Having some drawing skills can help with this stage, but they are not necessary.  The storyboards can be drawn by hand or on the computer.

A class in graphic design is going to be needed for the next aspect of video game design.  This class is going to teach those who want to create games to be able to take their concepts and storyboards and turn them into media that can be played.  Not only are they going to need this class, but they are going to need to know how to write a program that is going to run the game.

Once the graphics are created and the programs are created to run the game, the designer needs to put them together so that they can test out their game to see if it plays correctly.  If there are any glitches in the game, the designer is going to fix them and then send the game out to the testers.  While it only took a few paragraphs to explain what a video game designer is and what they do, the actual process can take years to complete depending on the size of the game.

Small games that are easily played and won may only take a few months from conception to market.  Games that are more in depth and that take more time to beat and play through them can take up to eighteen months to finalize.  A game is not going to be shipped out until all the bugs are found and corrected.

This is because people are going to be less inclined to purchase a follow up game if the first game had a lot of issues or if it was not fun to play.  There is a lot of pressure to being a game designer, but those who are in the industry do it because they love the challenge and completing a game gives them a rush that not many others are going to know.

It is not important to be a great artist to be a game designer.  It is more important to have graphic design experience or classes than it is to be able to draw by hand.  The other important factor is learning about programming and how it fits into game creation.  Creating games that have no glitches is the most important aspect of being a game designer.
